Barriers to career advancement in the United States

English proficiency

Limited English proficiency is correlated with lower wages. It’s a critical barrier to higher-paid work and career advancement for those who are not fluent in the language, forcing them into occupations that pay less or offer fewer opportunities for promotion beyond their current position. Many free ESL resources exist–some available online or through local classes offered by community organizations like your school district—to help you improve your speaking/listening skills so this won’t be an issue going forward!

Foreign credentials and job experience

Immigrants face barriers to gainful employment because their credentials and foreign work experience do not transfer smoothly into the US labor market. As a result, immigrants unable on entering positions that match what they had back home are sometimes forced to take lower-level jobs which don’t always suit them well enough. This can be especially dire for those who have spent time working in higher-paying fields where obtaining such opportunities would require more specific qualifications than just an overall skill set.
