Higher Education in America -Ph.D.- Second Episode

higher education america 1

I was talking about an academic career as a career after my Ph.D. degree. Academic jobs can come in a variety of ways – tenure track faculty (professor), non-tenure track teaching or research faculty (professor or scientist), or short-term post-doctoral fellows.

The difference between these needs to be stated a little. The tenure system introduced at American universities. Tenure is much like a permanent settlement. That means a lifetime of employment. Those professors who have tenure, are unlikely to get a job. No other job in America has such job security – In other areas such as company jobs, such as layoffs, there are fears that tenured professors will only lose characteristic or serious offenses; Can But to get this safety of Tenure, it takes a lot of hard work – the first 5 years after joining Assistant Professor, you have to prove your skills in intense research, education, and administrative work, To receive a large amount of funding/grant. After this, the tenor of the Tenure Review is in Peru if you are in Peru. So the first 5 years of the tenure track job went quite well.

The advantages of a career as a professor are both. The disadvantages include not having any time off work – for your own sake, maybe working at night or on weekends. In other company jobs, like getting out of the office at 5 am, the professors’ work is not only a career or addiction, so back home, maybe writing time papers, writing grant proposals, or answering course grading / emailing students. The professorship is therefore not a work of eight hours a day, but rather it becomes a lifestyle.

But the benefits? There are many benefits. For many, meditation is all about research, and as a professor, this work can be done very well. In industrial research labs, such a company can only do work that has convenient commercial profits, a lot of freedom as a professor. And regularly meeting with students, helping them build a life, these are invaluable. In addition to this, there are many other freedoms – such as having no obligation to hold eight or five office clocks, almost all professors are their own boss, so managing the time is on their own. And many vacations are unearthed during summer or Winter Vacations (though almost all professors work at this time in their own studies, which is another matter). There is not much of a boss – in most places, a professor has a total of three or four bosses – the department chair, the dean, the provost, and the president of the university. It’s too informal – managers are bullying,

The salary of the professor is less on paper than the salary of the company, because the salary of the company is called as 12 months, and the salary of the professors is 6 months. During the six months of the summer, professors are not unemployed – almost all of them take summer courses or raise salaries from research funds. As a result, the salaries of the professors get closer to the job of the company.

And most state universities have good pensions and benefits packages – thereby guaranteeing a good pension after retirement. Moreover, there are many benefits including health insurance. And the cost of living is less than the cost of living in a university city, and in fact, the salary of professors in one aspect is more than the job of a big city company.

And last, of all, I can say that immigration benefits – University H-B-B quota is not a hassle, you can apply at any time, and getting a green card through the university is quite easy – the university office does all the work.

So, as a whole, the job of a tenure-track professor is as highly regarded in America as it is in other respects. However, the number of these jobs is less and the competition for such a job is much higher.

The non-tenure track took the Teaching Faculty in many places. The titles of these jobs are Teaching Professor. In this case, there is no benefit of tenure and you have to teach 5/5 courses per semester. However, there is no obligation to do research. Many people say this is less competition and enjoy reading. In addition, the non-tenure track holds a research position, being appointed as a research professor or scientist at the university. However, these terms are almost always granted dependent which means that the research center’s funding does not depend on the terms. A large university has a research center with good funding, where many such research professors or scientists are appointed. There is no obligation to teach them, they have to spend their entire time researching.

Among the academic jobs, I would finally say that I am a post-doctoral fellow. These are mainly part-time (3, 2, or 3 years) jobs as a researcher under various professors after doing Ph.D. Professors seek a Ph.D. researcher to help with various projects. Beginning as a Post-Doctoral Fellow to work as a Senior Researcher in the lab. For many topics like biology-related academic lines, it is almost mandatory to have a post dock. Although not compulsory in computer science, many are now doing postdoc for 2/2 years to gain experience and work. It’s easy to get a job like this. Traditional interviews do not take place, it is possible to obtain such a job if you can work with the hiring professor. But the problem is these are temporary jobs – everyone knows that for 3 or 2 years, or the older one will post 5 years post dock then find a permanent job. However, if you take a few postdocs to get a job after passing out, the branding of the new university may be useful, and the time to get a healthy tenure track job can be matched. The pay is quite low. Assistants are like half of the professors. However, it is possible to get this job at any time if the hiring professor agrees, so after getting a Ph.D. as a short-term job, the post-doc is not bad.
