SSN is a Social Security number. It is generally a nine-digit number. It is usually issued to the U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and temporary for working residents under section 205 of the Social Security Act, codified as 42 U.S.C. § 405. The number is issued to the individual person by the Social Security Administration, to an independent agency of the United States government.

As its primary aim is to track individuals for Social Security purposes, the Social Security number has now become a de facto national identification number. It is especially for taxation and other purposes. A Social Security number may be able to be obtained for various purposes.
